The Romancers - Slauson Shuffle [one of those classic instrumental albums]

Before the Premiers, Cannibal & the Headhunters, and The Blendells, there was The Romancers. The Romancers were the first East L.A. Chicano band to record an album and were the main influence of the mid-sixties East L.A. sound. They were also the first East L.A. band to work with Billy Cardenas and Eddie Davis, who went on to record many other Eastside bands throughout the 1960s. The Romancers made two albums on the Del-Fi record label and many other singles for Eddie Davis’ Linda label. The main figure in the Romancers' story is Max Uballez, the leader, chief songwriter, and rhythm guitarist. Max was involved in the production and/or wrote songs for many recordings by The Romancers, as well as other top Eastside bands ...

After months with not to much postings on this blog - I'm really thinking most of the interesting surf stuff is already online, if not here, then over at Trustar Vibrations, The Fat City Cigar Lounge or Ryp's Twilightzone and many other small blogs - I thought this compilation of four cd's is really missing.

The combination of the very well written and fine illustrated booklet with the four cds spreading the years from the beginning until 1995/96 is absolutely unbeatable.

And it is for many, many years out of print. What a shame ...

luckily I own one of this boxes and I wasn't lazy and spent almost a full day to scan the booklet and a gave the cds a fresh XLD rip.

Le groupe se forme en 1961 du coté de Maisons-Alfort, premier 45 trs en 1962 chez Vogue, et ils participent au festival rock du Palais des Sports en 63. Tout le monde se souvient de la première guitare de Dean une "Futurama" (sur les pochettes ci-dessus) d'origine Tchèque, avant qu'il n'opte pour la stratocaster.

Les Fantômes were founded in Maisons-Alfort (a city in the south-east of Paris, France) and they released their first single on Vogue Records. They took part at the Rockfestival at the Palais des Sports in '63. Everbody remembers Dean's first guitar ( a Czech Futurama, which can be viewed on some sleeves) before he switched to a Fender Stratocaster

Dean Noton (d'origine Ecossaise) au solo, Dany Marrane à la basse, Jacky Pasut à la rythmique, Charly Benaroch qui vient du groupe "Les Cyclones" à la batterie. Jean Claude Chane puis Roger David, puis Bernard Ferraro remplaçeront le départ à l'armée de Jacky Pasut. Enfin, Michel Gaucher au saxophone marquera en 1964 la fin de ce groupe mythique.

Charly Benaroch was replaced after his departure to "Les Cyclones" by Jean Claude Chane > Roger David.

Interlude: The Sputniks [East-Germany]

The Sputniks were a band from East-Germany and active between 1963 and 1966. They are famous for two things: They wrote and recorded an instrumental song called: Sputnik-Thema, which found it's way on a couple of 60s and Twist compilations. After a Rolling Stones Show in West-Berlin (September 1965), and the following destruction of The Open Air Stage "Waldbühne", the complete area and some trains, the government of East-Germany decided that Beat isn't good at all for their people - and was simply forbidden. The Sputniks were disbanded (by the government!) and it took 30 years until they reunited. For the music/bands in all Eastern-European countries this was a rough impact. All record companies and also the live-clubs were controlled by the governments. Just a few Beat & R'n'R bands were (illegal) active and much less bands recorded sessions & rehearsal-tapes in mostly bad sound quality and shared them via tape-to-tape or "illegal" vinyl copies. That's also the reason for the big popularity of instrumental music in Eastern-Europe, no lyrics - no censorship.

"Ride The First Wave" is actually an album conceived by the Slovenian "Bitch Boys" and was recorded between 2003-2004 in Ljubljana. It consists of covers of original songs of the socalled "First Wave" era from ≈ 1959-1964. Charged with own interpretations of various other composers like Edvard Grieg, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Bedrich Smetana. Well so far with the Bitch Boys. But what about the ORIGINALS?

A young blind boy, just 13 year aged started his international career with this album (although it was already his 4th album!) ... Despite the title it's NO surf album, but a sort of a concept album around beach releated themes. Recorded 1963 and released 1964. The song from the Muscle Beach Party movie [Happy Street] is included.

Roger Christian, Gary Usher and Brian Wilson (of The Beach Boys) wrote six songs for the film: "Surfer's Holiday" performed by Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello and the cast; "Runnin' Wild" performed by Frankie Avalon; "My First Love" and "Muscle Beach Party", both performed by Dick Dale and His Del-Tones; "Muscle Bustle" performed by Donna Loren with Dick Dale and His Del-Tones; and "Surfin' Woodie" performed a cappella by Dick Dale with the cast.
Guy Hemric and Jerry Styner wrote two songs for the film: "Happy Street" performed by Little Stevie Wonder; and "A Girl Needs a Boy" first performed by Annette Funicello, then reprised by Frankie Avalon as "A Boy Needs a Girl".

Among other things, California's Shredder Records releases some of the best guitar instrumental bands around. Dragstrip is certainly more proof of that. This band serves up thirteen totally rockin' tunes on this CD, including knockout covers of "Don't Fear the Reaper" and "Jack the Ripper." True, there are a lot of bands out there right now playing this style of music...but those that really seem to be able to pull it off are few and far between. This LP was originally released in 1960 by Crown Records, one of those budget labels ... started by the Bihari Brothers, who ran also the Modern and RPM labels. Billy Boyd is just virtual person like Don & Eddie who "released" the same album on the Modern label the same year. (MLP-7014). Billy Boyd is no one else than Jerry Cole ...
The music isn't spectacular at all, some Rock'n'Roll, Blues, Rhythm&Blues, Jazz - and everything in instrumental style with a remarkable saxophon player. This Lp was sold between soaps and perfumes.

In the Biography of Scott Walker this LP is named as one of the greatest rip offs in Pop History. Fact is that the producer of this LP Mark Taylor want to present a best selling album. In the rise of the Walker Brothers fame in the US Taylor wanted to sell this LP as a Walker Brothers LP. This LP was recorded from Scott and his schoolmate John Stewart in 1964 as The Dalton Brothers. So the pictures has to be on this cover Scott Engel & John Stewart - not John Maus alias John Walker. Stewart wasn't a real member of the WBs he only composed songs for them and does some arrangements.Taylor decided to put John Walker on that cover, even if he had nothing to with this record. The sound of this record is pretty close to the Walkers. It is a good album. Not yet released as a cd. [by Affendaddy]

Raunchy - or "The Birth" of Instrumental Rock'n'Roll

Bill Justis upon hearing that a certain Rock n' Roll musician made a lot of money, put down his trumpet for a saxophone, bought $80 of Rock n' Roll records, and set his sights on stardom. His May "57 hit "Raunchy" gets it's title from a magazine article on current teenage slang. Justis and Manker concocted the song in Justis' home while making fun of Rock n' Roll, convinced that they too could do it well if only they tried. Bill Justis was older than most teenage Rock fans, and had little interested in Rock as a musical style. However he soon realized that Rock's basic and simple sound was actually harder to achieve then first thought. "Raunchy" became the first Rock n' Roll instrumental song.
"Raunchy " was a little Southern tune that Justis' just couldn't get out of his head. Originally named "Backwoods" it was a tune that he recalled from his childhood in Birmingham, Alabama.
There was nothing sophisticated about "Raunchy" - teenage slang for dirty or messy - which came out in November, 1957. It consisted of Sid Manker playing a short guitar riff over and over, alternating with Justis on tenor sax leading the Sun house band. The only thing remarkable about the recording was the riff and the unorthodox way Manker played it. Rather than play in the middle string range, as most rock and country guitarist would, Manker used the bass strings, further exaggerated by the studio echo.
"Raunchy" shot up the Billboard charts, just missing becoming #1 and staying in the Top 40 for fourteen weeks. The record became a classic, one of rock's first true instrumentals, but Justis would have only one other charting record, "College Man" (#42)
Unlike other Sun artists, Justis was well educated, from a well to do family, and had formal musical training. In 1957 Justis became music director for Sun, arranging hits for Cash, Lewis, and Rich. Justis eventually left Sun after a fight with Phillips, and for a brief time produced for his own label Play Me Records. He moved to Nashville in 1961 and became a successful arranger and producer for everyone from Ronnie Dove to the Dixiebells. Before his death from cancer in 1982, Justis wrote the musical scores to Burt Reynolds film "Smokey and the Bandit", and later produced major hits for Bobby Vinton.
Neither Justis or Manker, who remained a session man at Sun, capitalized on the uniquely original guitar sound they had created. That would fall to an enterprising deejay, Lee Hazlewood in Phoenix Arizona, and his 19 year old protege, Duane Eddy.

The Flintstones - Surfin' Fred (1965)

Fred, Wilma, Barney, and Betty are holidaying on Rock Island, where a surfing contest is to be held. Fred hopes to relive his carefree teenage years, dancing to "hip" music with swarms of holidaying teenagers and revelling in their adulation of his sporting prowess. However, in the surf, Fred is repeatedly blasted by monsterous waves, as he tries desperately to impress the young crowd. Rock star and teenage heartthrob, Jimmy Darrock, who has been recruited to present the winner's trophy, avoids recognition by wearing sunglasses and assuming the role of a lifeguard. But, he had not counted on Fred's ineptitude on a board. Darrock has to retrieve Fred from the surf and perform resuscitation on him. When Wilma paddles over, a huge wave throws Fred onto her shoulders. Wilma manages to navigate through the pillars of a boardwalk, bringing her surfboard to rest inside the revolving door of the hotel. Fred and Wilma win the trophy for most adept use of a surfboard, and Darrock performs in the hotel restaurant, singing about the surfing craze ...

This drawing is originally part of the title sequence to a comic strip called 'The Girl Who Couldn't Hula' in a retro style anthology called Waikiki Luau. However I was never really pleased with the strip - I only liked tis image and it was later used for a CD cover by a group called the Surfones (they actually named their album 'The Girl Who Couldn't Hula' after this image). But if ever you can come up with a strip that could fit this image let me know. (Simon Mackie)

A two-sided monsterpiece from Hairy Records (1964) this record is based on the hugely successful early sixties “Silly Surfer” and “Weird-ohs” model car assembly kits from The Hawk Model Co.. The Weird-ohs model kits were introduced in 1963. The initial three-kit batch of Weird-ohs consisted of Digger, a dragster; Daddy, a commuter; and Davey, a biker. These were soon joined by other releases that went on to become one of the most popular and successful series of model kits in plastic hot rod history. Similar to the drag monsters and toy model kits that Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and Stanley Mouse were creating the Weird-ohs were the creation of William Campbell. The Musical Director here was no less than surf maestro Gary Usher.

and another REVIEW: This fifth (!) collection of songs which were tied in to the creations of illustrator Ed "Big Daddy" Roth and the commercial tie-in plastic models is a pretty weak affair, with songs that sound derivative of everything from the Beach Boys first album (which it most strongly resembles), to every other surf and drag record which Gary Usher was involved with. A collection of songs tied around the two-dimensional stereotypes of surfer guys and gals, the music is strictly fourth-tier stuff, with clunky melody lines tied to lyrics that are grade-school level, at best:
There's a real cool head who makin' the scene with a six-pack in hand, he's a cola fiend with dirty hair and greasy fingernails you can follow him by his messy trails. ["Hodad Making The Scene With A Six-Pack"]
Roger Christian, Nick Venet, Jimmie Haskell, David Weiss, Gary Usher and producer Reuben Klamer fill the grooves with as many sound-effects and topical references as they can, but for an album that's aimed mostly at young teenagers, the songs are sorely lacking in humor and are bereft of catchy hooks. Exceptions include the melodic drive of "A Woodie On A Surfari" and the ultra-sexist "Beach Bunny Catchin' Rays." For some strange reason, the writers also include several "monster" references in their songs, with "Monster Surfer Hangin' Six," and "Hearse On A Surfari" all employing "Monster Mash" rip-offs which quickly grow old. For a collection of songs which are demanding $300 on collector's circuits, I'd expect more quality from the artists involved, but The Silly Surfers sound more like Gremmies than Hot-Doggers. About half of the songs are this album were later merged with half from the Weird-Ohs album above to create a dual platter of both artists *** [or was it the other way round?], Music to Make Models By. Lost and Wanted - Then Found: The New Dimensions - Surf'n Bongos [1963]

Formed by Beverly Hills eighth-graders in 1962, the New Dimensions issued three instrumental surf LPs shortly afterward for the small budget label Sutton. Like most such groups, they'd be totally forgotten by all but the most dedicated surf music collectors if not for the presence of New Dimensions mainstays Jimmy Greenspoon (later keyboardist for Three Dog Night) and Michael Lloyd (later in the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, and still later producer of records by the Osmonds, Shaun Cassidy, and Leif Garrett). The New Dimensions cut sides very much in the style of the Chantays and Dick Dale, but never made a commercial impression, in part because they only issued LPs, without putting any singles on the market. After evolving into the Alley Kats and cutting a few singles, Lloyd and Greenspoon took separate musical paths, with 22 tracks from their early group eventually finding their way onto the CD compilation The Best of the New Dimensions.

The Surfsiders "Sing The BBoys Songbook" (Design/ Pickwick, DLP-208, 1965)

Easily one of the most noteworthy attempts at ripping-kids-off-by-replicating-a-popular-group's-songs, the Surfsiders 1965 LP seems to have finally gained a kind of celebrity status over the last decade. Essentially a collection of hit BBoys singles as performed by atonal studio hacks with maybe a day to crank this damn record out, this baby manages to turn the (you know; heartbreaking, gorgeously sculpted and layered, etc etc -- you've heard it all before) original B. Wilson arrangements into simplified off-key bar band bleats loaded with dimestore barbershop quartet harmonies, all lovingly topped off by some frighteningly enthusiastic playing. Probably besting even the lamest Beatles ripoff records for both style and substance, this gem can go toe to toe with "Pet Sounds" any day of the week for me. The more you love (or hate) the originals the better this ought to get, and this rip is from the cleanest copy of the LP (of the, *koff koff*, four) that I've owned over the years. Fun, fun, fun!

The short Story:
Members of Torturing Elvis (Remi Gits and Billy Favata) randomly hooked up with Sandy on a leg of a tour out West.
They made plans to come back and record some music with Sandy which they did 2 years later.

From playing in the Rockabilly scene in Torturing Elvis, Remi and Billy were acquaintances of Eddie Angel (guitar player currently for Los Straitjackets and The Neanderthals). When Eddie found out about the project, he was interested in playing on it too ...which he was finally able to do in late '06.
After a few of the usual delays (which could be expected with any project that has members spread out across the country in different bands) they were able to get the thing finished and put out there into the unknown limits of the world wide web!

Hopefully enough people like what they hear and The Sin City Termites can put together another record ...next time though ... it'll happen alot faster.

Thunderbirds Are Go! is a 1966 British science-fiction film based on Thunderbirds, a 1960s television series starring marionette puppets and featuring scale model effects in a filming process dubbed "Supermarionation". Written by Thunderbirds creators Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, directed by David Lane and produced by AP Films, Thunderbirds Are Go develops the franchise with a plot focusing on the futuristic spacecraft Zero-X and its manned mission to Mars. When Zero-X suffers a mechanical failure during re-entry, it is up to International Rescue, with the aid of the Thunderbird machines, to save the astronauts on board before the spacecraft is obliterated in a crash landing.
Filmed from March to June 1966 and premiering in December, Thunderbirds Are Go includes, in a first for an AP Films production, cameo appearances from puppets of real-life celebrities Cliff Richard and The Shadows, who also contributed four songs, released separately as "Thunderbirds are Go!" EP, to the musical score. It is also the first motion picture to have been filmed with an early form of video assist technology known as "Add-a-Vision", and incorporated landscape footage that was shot on location in Portugal.Special effects pieces, produced under the supervision of Derek Meddings and including rocket launch sequences, space shots and a miniature representation of the Martian surface, required six months to complete.
Despite positive initial reviews, which praised the film as a well-made cinematic transfer of the Thunderbirds television series, Thunderbirds Are Go soon proved to be a box office failure for the Andersons. The disappointment of this outcome was intensified by the knowledge that Series Two of Thunderbirds would be cut down to six episodes and that AP Films' upcoming television project would be a brand-new series, which would later be titled Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons and screened from 1967. Formed in 1965, the now legendary California band, PAPA DOO RUN RUN, quickly discovered their forte - they sounded like the BBoys! That sound led them to surf music icons, Jan & Dean, and from 1976-80 Papa toured North America with the duo. In the 80s Papa graduated from J&D to TheBBoys, and toured and recorded with members of that band throughout the next 2 decades. The group also had an unprecedented 15-year run as the "Celebrity House Band" at Disneyland from 1975-90!
Papa’s 1975 Top 40 hit “Be True To Your School” reached No. 1 in California. Their ground breaking CD “California Project” (1985) exploded onto the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at no. 17 and earned the band their second Gold Record and a Grammy Nomination. Additionally, Papa Doo Run Run appeared in, and recorded the soundtrack album for the CBS-TV movie “Deadman’s Curve”. The band currently has 10 CD releases and a full length DVD.
Today, Papa Doo Run Run still averages about 100 dates a year, worldwide. Their act encompasses all the great Classic Rock hits of the 60's and 70's, with a special emphasis on their award winning re-creation of the hits of TheBBoys. Their best kept secret... The Sunrays - Andrea [1965] produced by Murry Wilson

Murry (Gage) Wilson (July 2, 1917 – June 4, 1973) was an American musician and record producer, best remembered as the father of TheBBoys members Brian, Carl and Dennis, and uncle of bandmate Mike Love. Murry Wilson was also the original manager of the band, opened a lot of doors for TheBBoys and served as their music publisher.

After his sons went their own ways in writing, producing and performing - "without his advices", he decided to promote his "own" band, namely "The Sunrays".

Before 1964 this band was known as The Renegades and later as Larry Tremaine & The Renegades. Rick Henn, their lead singer had written "I Live For The Sun", before Murry Wilson's appearance. Their first single was Car Party & Outta Gas (released as Tower 101 in 1964) and both songs written by Murry Wilson. Afterwards The Sunrays released their only LP - a classic (mono) & twelve track album - in Dezember 1965 for Tower Records, a sub-division of Capitol. This album was produced by M Wilson & Don Ralke, who also did some arrangements. They came to little fame with their singles "Andrea" and "I Live For The Sun"*, and a TV-appearance in a teeny-soap called "Never Too Young". They released a few more singles until the end of 1966. Thirty years later the "Andrea" album was repacked and sold as "Best Of Tower recordings", now with stereo versions of the original album. There was also a 3-cd-box with all their songs available … which includes also some Renegades/Renegade Five tracks! - but this one never came to my country.

* Band member Eddy Medora on the origin of the song: "I had a song called, 'Run Run Run' and Rick(y) Henn called me up to come over and finish it. And I didn't come over. And 'Run Run Run' is the same hook as 'I Live for the Sun'. And Rick finished it, basically he wrote 'I Live for the Sun' with the idea of 'Run Run Run'." The track has an approximate duration of two minutes and twenty five seconds.
Steve O'Reilly played lead guitar & sang (loved blues) with our band, at the time called Larry Tremaine & The Renegades. Larry left the band in 1963 and Steve left the band when "I Live for the Sun" began to break saying "I don't wanna be in the group anymore, I think I can make it on my own." Larry Tremaine went on to be a HOT top 40 DJ and TV host of the nationally syndicated dance show "Casino Royal Dance Party" in Los Angeles.

The Ventures - "Surfing" [1963]

In 1958, Bob Bogle and Don Wilson, formed the nucleus of the original music group, The Ventures. The duo was joined a few years later by Nokie Edwards to record "Walk, Don't Run". The song hit Billboard's Singles Chart on July 18, 1960 and peaked at #2. The band was prolific during the 60's with touring and recording albums.
Since that spectacular beginning, The Ventures later joined by Mel Taylor, Gerry McGee, Leon Taylor and Bob Spalding have gone on to help define an often overlooked branch of rock and roll music: Instrumental Rock. The band is credited by many guitar legends as being an influence on them. Their style and music is certainly unique.
More than 50 years later - with record sales approaching 100 million, 14 songs that hit the Singles Charts and 37 LPs that hit the Album Charts, their lineup remains solid.

GREMMY: Comes from Gremlin. Beginners or young hangers-on who are trouble some to surfers.
HANGING FIVE: Five toes over the nose (or front) of the board.
THE HEAVIES: Very big waves, 18 to 20 feet high; found only in Hawaii.
HERO: One who thinks he's greater on a surfboard than he is.
HO-DAD: A greaser, sort of a Hot-Rodder with long hair and sideburns.
PIPELINE: A very large tube.
PSEUDO: Pretends he's a surfer, but isn't.
SHOREBREAK: Small waves that break close to shore.
SPINNER: A full 360 degree turn while riding a wav; A very difficult maneuver.
THE SURFER: A magazine published in Dana Point, California, which is the bible of "Surfing".
TEN-OVER: Ten toes over the nose.
THE TUBE: The hollow part of the wave.
WIPE-OUT: Being spilled by a wave.
WOODY (or WOODIE): The station wagon a surfer uses to haul his board.

Several members of The Explorers Club were previously in a band called 1984.

The Exotics formed in the Winter of 1994 and began their career playing to capacity crowds starting with their very first show. Maybe the surf explosion was fueled by the newly released movie Pulp Fiction, or maybe it was just time for something different in a music scene dominated by long haired hard rockers. The Exotics didn't care why, they were just enjoying the ride. After hitting every possible venue in the Milwaukee metropolitan area, they began playing farther and farther from their home base. They became a regular act at Lee's Liquor Lounge in Minneapolis and played many live music venues in Chicago at eight week intervals. The Exotics continued to play any city that would have them in a ten hour radius. They played gigs with the King of surf music himself, Dick Dale, they also shared the stage many times with surf comrades Los Straitjackets. By far the best musical friendship they formed along the way was with Southern Culture On The Skids, who invited the Exotics to tour with them on three different occasions. The tours included the East coast from Boston to the Carolinas, the Midwest, and a tour of the state of Florida. Hundreds of gigs, one single and one LP later, the Exotics disbanded at the end of 1999. In 2005 the boys reformed the band and made featured appearances on the long running public radio program “A Prairie Home Companion” with Garrison Keillor and at the festival Chicago Exotica. "We founded this band in May 2002. We were inspired by another great Slovenian surf band The Bitch Boys. Very soon we released our first demo named »Stååårrii«. Because of a very bad sound quality of this demo we decided to record another demo named »Greasy Peel« in Feb 2003. We promoted this demo and got very good response in our home country Slovenia, and also from the greatest and most respected surf producer in the world - Phil Dirt. In July 2004 we released our third demo named »Summoning Tsunami«, which was rated with 4 out of 5 stars! On 18th of october 2008 we relesed our first album named TO SURF AND PROTECT there is 21 songs on it and all of them are originals. Phil Dirt gave us 5 stars for it. Playboy is the third album by Motown girl group, The Marvelettes, released to capitalize on their hit singles "Playboy" and "Beechwood 4-5789", in 1962. It also includes the single, "Someday, Someway", and heartfelt standard, "Forever", which would be released as a single the following year. Other compositions include "Goddess of Love", "Cry Over You", and "Mix It Up". George Gordy, William "Mickey" Stevenson, and Marvin Gaye, who had produced "Beechwood 4-5789" all did some work on the Playboy LP as well.

Everybody's Rockin' with The Champs [1959]

Everybody's Rockin' with The Champs was their second LP (1959) and the sleeve of this album was also used for a couple of European/British EP releases. I suppose everybody knows this band and their most popular hit from January 1958 ... pressed on the B-side of their first single and written by Daniel Flores the saxophon player. Due to an existing record contract with his Danny Flores Trio (probably with RPM) the song Tequila was credited to the imaginary person of Chuck Rio. Later Daniel Flores became permanently Chuck Rio ... Obviously he signed away the US rights on his song the get an agreement, but received the money from the worldwide rights on this song until his death on September 19, 2006. The origin of The Champs was Santa Paula California, the birthplace of Danny Flores, but their members came from different US States.

Unbelievable, but you really get this cruel red(!) sleeve with your download (for example over at emusic or at am*z*n). Plus ten excellent tracks** featuring the marvellous Ritchie Valens and Jerry Cole (Kole) on guitar. Originally this album was released by Crown Records (as #336) in 1963. Posthum of Ritchie Valens, you remember the plane crash?
But attention: if you think, that's "the old Crown trick": pack some already released songs into a new sleeve - that's NOT fully the truth. Obviously Crown bought the rights on an unreleased Del-Fi session, because half of the ten tracks haven't been released by Richie Valens on Del-Fi albums. Maybe these additional tracks are not among the best recordings Ritchie Valens did for Del-Fi (!)

... but had already a look for the original front sleeve. Again scanned by the also marvelous Benjamin H.
(I felt free to restore the "R" of Ritchie a tiny little bit). So you can get a real vintage album sleeve with remastered songs. This time not for free, but so much cheaper than the original LP ...

Forbidden Planet is a 1956 science fiction film directed by Fred M. Wilcox, with a screenplay by Cyril Hume. It starred Leslie Nielsen, Walter Pidgeon, and Anne Francis. The characters and its setting were inspired by those in William Shakespeare's The Tempest, and its plot has many similarities.

Forbidden Planet features special effects for which A. Arnold Gillespie, Irving G. Ries, and Wesley C. Miller were nominated for an Academy Award. It was the only major award nomination the film received. Forbidden Planet features the groundbreaking use of an all-electronic music musical score. It also featured "Robby the Robot", one of the first movie robots that was more than just a "tin can" and had a personality.

In the early 1960s, there was an explosion of youth fads that coincided with a sharp rise in the pool of top Los Angeles rock'n'roll session musicians. What does one have to do with the other, you might ask? Well, many record labels with an eye on each trend saw both new markets to exploit, and the ready availability of studio manpower to capitalize upon them. Studio-only, temporary aggregations of top session men formed to cut instrumental albums. The speed at which the groups were assembled was matched only by the speed at which the actual discs were recorded. Surfing, hot rodding, the folk boom -- all were ripe were plundering.

Though such exploitation LPs are usually thought of as the domain of small budget labels (and indeed, many such long-players did appear), much bigger companies got in on the act as well. In the case of the Avalanches' 1963 Ski Surfin' album, the then-young Warner Brothers label grabbed ahold of two fads at once. It was hardly the first all-"surf" album; it wasn't even the first ski-themed LP, folk singer Bob Gibson having issued one, Ski Songs (one of the first records by a noted folk performer whose arrangements used electric guitar), on Elektra as the 1950s were turning into the 1960s. Surely, however, Ski Surfin' was the first album to cash in on both skiing and surfing at once.

Such a feat might have been hard to pull off with songs that included lyrics. There were no such encumbrances on Ski Surfin', however, which benefited from an ace group of Hollywood session players who comprised the Avalanches, including one future superstar. Drummer Hal Blaine, the most famous of all L.A. '60s rock session players, can be heard on too many hits recorded in the City of Angels to count, including several by the Beach Boys, the Mamas & the Papas, and Phil Spector-produced acts. Guitarist Billy Strange, in addition to playing on numerous Hollywood '60s recordings (including some by Rick Nelson, the Beach Boys, and Love), worked as an arranger for Nancy Sinatra and Dean Martin, and also co-wrote one of Chubby Checker's biggest hits, "Limbo Rock." Guitarist Tommy Tedesco's resume is at least as extensive as Blaine's and Strange's, including credits stretching from the Beach Boys, Phil Spector, Elvis Presley, and the Monkees to Frank Zappa.

Filling out the band were steel guitarist Wayne Burdick (who played on records by country artists such as Lefty Frizzell, Johnny Western, and Freddie Hart) and pianist Al deLory (another active sessioneer, to become most famous for producing hits for Glen Campbell in the late '60s). Campbell himself, incidentally, was yet another prolific Hollywood session man at the time, though he doesn't appear on the Avalanches' LP. One future superstar who does, however, is David Gates, who handles Fender bass, a good five years before he began his run as songwriter, keyboardist, and singer for soft rock hitmakers Bread. While his presence here might surprise (or even shock) those who know Gates only for his Bread smashes, in fact he'd been knocking around the Hollywood rock biz as a session musician, songwriter, and producer since the early 1960s. Composing the Murmaids' 1963 Top Three girl group hit "Popsicle and Icicles"; writing the Girlfriends' medium-sized 1963 hit "My One and Only, Jimmy Boy," one of the greatest Phil Spector soundalike productions ever; and producing Captain Beefheart's first two singles (as well as writing the A-side of the second, the Howlin' Wolf-like "Moonchild") were just some of his most notable pre-Bread achievements. Alas, he doesn't write any of the material on Ski Surfin'.

The talent involved in generating Ski Surfin' spilled over to the control booth, as it was engineered by Stan Ross at Gold Star Studios -- the same engineer, and same facility, behind many of Phil Spector's records. Producing was Wayne Shanklin, Jr., most famous for writing or co-writing big hits by Frankie Laine ("Jezebel"), Jerry Wallace ("Primrose Lane"), and Miss Toni Fisher ("The Big Hurt," the first widely heard record to use phasing, and which Shanklin produced as well).

Shanklin, as it happened, wrote virtually all of the original material on Ski Surfin', getting credited as the sole author of four tracks and the co-writer (with Al deLory) of a fifth, "Winter Evening Nocturne." The remainder of the LP was devoted to covers of songs with a wintry theme, including such pre-rock era tunes as "Winter Wonderland," "Sleigh Ride," jazzman Claude Thornhill's "Snowfall," "Midnight Sun" (which Johnny Mercer and Lionel Hampton had hands in composing), Irving Berlin's "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm," and Frank Loesser's "Baby, It's Cold Outside." As for the Shanklin-penned tunes, the ski-winter themes were mostly conveyed by the titles, a la "Slalom," "Ski Surfin'," "Avalanche," and "Along the Trail with You."

For those who fear the results were a wholly cynical exercise, take note that there's some really hot guitar playing throughout the record, often with growling, distorted, reverberant tones. If it was likely quickly written and recorded, it wasn't mailed in, even if some of the cover material made for rather unlikely choices to be made over into pseudo-surf instrumentals. If you've always wondered how "Baby, It's Cold Outside" could be made into a pounding midtempo rocker with sustained fuzzy riffs, here's yer chance; it and one of the other more intense numbers, "Avalanche," would also feature on a Warner Brothers single. Dig, too, how the guys manage to turn "Sleigh Ride" into a son-of-"What'd I Say" electric keyboard-anchored groove.

Ski Surfin', however, did not result in an avalanche of sales for the Avalanches, who never did another album. Of course, most of them remained active in the music business as key behind-the-scenes figures in 1960s Los Angeles rock, though they didn't necessarily abandon the opportunities to do similar quickie LPs when they came up. In fact, Strange did quite a few such albums in the '60s as a solo artist, with Blaine cutting several on his own as well. Buried as it was within the players' massive resumes, Ski Surfin' passed into the realm of rarity, noticed only by those who recognized some of the names -- then all but unknown, now familiar to and respected by serious students of '60s rock -- in the small print on the back sleeve. -- Richie Unterberger

Recorded, mixed and post-edited with GarageBand (that's a soundprogram by Apple) on my old & lousy white MacBook. The mainparts were played by a real keyboard ... So this song was not created by a real band! But who cares. Tricks in recording business are as old as the business itself. It started more the fifty years ago with hiring professional musicians instead of the real band members for recording sessions, overdubbing guitar leads & harmony vocals and today people are using their computers...

This is not a remix or something like that from an already existing Telstar version and

Surfin' South Of The Border with The Lively Ones

The dozen cuts on 1964's Surfin' South of the Border are split among the Lively Ones and the Surf Mariachis - the latter consisting of five renowned West Coast studio session instrumentalists under the direction of Del-Fi Records owner Bob Keane. The results yielded what was arguably one of the first "concept albums" of the surf rock subgenre. The project was unabashedly designed as a vehicle to release the remnants of the the Lively Ones' previous endeavors. The remaining time was filled with new Latin-flavored versions of tunes already well known by the targeted teen audience. Regardless of how opportunistic those terms might seem, give credit where credit is due, as Keane pulls off yet another inspired collection. Truth be told, it is curious why Lively Ones tracks such as the spirited opener, "Torquay," and the echoplex-happy reading of Ernest Gold's 1960 Oscar-winning composition "Exodus" were initially left on the editing room floor. The personnel of the Surf Mariachis boasted Conte Candoli (trumpet), Tom Scott (sax), Jay Migliori (sax), Billy Strange (guitar), and Frankie Capp (percussion), so it isn't that difficult to understand why they sound comparatively polished. by Lindsay Planer (AMG)

The Pyramids were a Surf group from Long Beach California. Formed around 1961, they had their only Top20 hit with their song "Penetration" in 1964 (released 1963)… Also in 1964 they appeared in the teenie movie "Bikini Beach" performing two songs (both were written by Gary Usher and Roger Christian) “Record Run” and the instrumental "Bikini Drag." They are also shown performing back-up on two additional songs in the film, (both written by Guy Hemric and Jerry Styner): "How About That?," sung by Frankie Avalon; and "Happy Feelin’ (Dance and Shout)" sung by Little Stevie Wonder.

Ronny And The Daytonas - The Original G.T.O. LP [1964]

Ronny and the Daytones - one of the very rare Non-Californian Surf (and Hot Rod) bands - were
formed in Nashville, Tennessee, around 1964 and famous for GTO, written by John "Bucky" Wilkin.
Billy Justis cut the tune with various Nashville session players, who had a feel for rock & roll and instructed Bucky to come up with a group name to put on the record. Wilkin became Ronny Dayton with the anonymous backing group becoming the Daytonas. GTO as song appeared later on many compilations. Managed by Billy Justis ("Raunchy" and former Sun Session player) they run their business for a couple of months. Some sources mentioned, that Bucky Wilkin didn't like touring and playing live, so they sent a phantom group on tour (which later came to fame as "The Hombres" ) ... After this tour Buzz Cason joined the group and their sound moved quickly away from the surf and hot rod image. One more album "Sandy" followed in 1966 [Mala 4002]. In 1968 they also changed their record company and released two further LPs.

The Original Surfaris - Bombora!

The story of this band started like many other band stories too. Some school mates are founding their first band, they had rehearsals and had some gigs, then a TV appearance and finally a record deal. But anyhow, after their first success, everything went different. Today this band is much more famous for the quarrel with the "other" Surfaris( famous for "Wipe Out") about the right on the name "Surfaris" than for the music they played. Almost half a century later nobody should care about such things. They played live the songs from other bands, perhaps without paying royalties, and have written Bombora, an also often copied song. Well, they had two records credited to their name but the album "Wheels" is probably not completely played by this band. Always the same story!

Snackin' With The Manatees [2001]

The Manatees at first glance come across as just another surf group yet deserve to be examined a bit closer. With the bulk of their material being instrumental guitar-rooted music, one could easily say that puts the Manatees in the ranks of multiple surf-based bands. What separates the Manatees is their unique song structure and complexity of the material they write and perform on Snackin' With the Manatees. On "Mendoza," one gets to experience the band's expert use of multiple time signature changes and melodic passages. The gradual addition of each instrument at the onset of the tune proves to be the first hook, followed by many other hooks. "Immigration," which begins with a Latin twist, progresses through multiple facades before returning to the original Latin flavor. This serves to have a hypnotic effect, capturing the listener into the band's tangled web. "Batman," one of the three covers from the 18 songs on the album, is sure to be a favorite with the dance crowd. The great dance groove and unique lead instrumental passages tend to lift this interpretation into the ranks of elite cover tunes. The use of guitar, instead of the original trumpet, as the prime focus proves to be a winning choice in the presentation. The Manatees are made up of an extremely tight rhythm section which is capable of changing tempo at the drop of a hat. The two guitarists who undertake the mission of inserting the melodic hooks do so with the expertise of true masters of their craft. Phil Bentz, one of the guitarists, brings the theremin, ukuele, mandolin, and lap steel into the mix when the need arises. These small nuances he brings to the board are many times one of the creative hooks which separate the Manatees from the typical surf group. With close to a solid hour of great instrumental guitar-rooted music, Snackin' With the Manatees is sure to be a treasured addition to any surf music collection. The Boys Next Door [1964-1967]

"The Boys Next Door" started as "The Four Wheels" and were true contemporaries of TBBoys; not only did they perform around the same time (1964-1967), this Indianpolis group of friends patterned their entire sound and appearance around their west coast doppelgangers. But The Boys Next Door weren't a simple cover band, they wrote and performed their own material, which payed obvious homage (and sometimes outright theft) to TBBoys' sound. Just listen to the first cuts on the disc: "Cold 45," "Central High Playmate," and most especially "Mandy" which steals it's structure directly from TBBoys' "The Man With All The Toys!" In fact, listening to the first three tracks, you might be hard-pressed to distinguish between this group and Brian Wilson's songs. But then this group does a great thing - by track four you hear them begin to develop an individual sound, which although it keeps the four-part harmonies and songwriting prowess, but begins to stretch out past the cars and girls sensibilities of their early records. "One Face In The Crowd," "Why Be Proud" and "See The Way She's Mine" all have a darker, more complex mood which fits the late-sixties experimentalism that was becoming more prevalent. They still retain their clear BBoys sound - the thick harmonies, the high falsetto lead, but the rhythms become harder and more complex, the lyrics become more introspective, and their music takes on a folk-rock edge which is interesting. Although The Boys Next Door never broke into national recognition, this CD makes a compelling argument that they were worthy of greater exposure. [&]

Otro de los grupos surgidos en el norte de Tamaulipas, concretamente en la Cd de Reynosa fueron los Johnny Jets. En la contraportada de su primer Lp "Ritmo Juvenil" se leia lo siguiente:
"Cierta mañana , cuando el sol empezaba a desperezarse, seis jovenes de distintas poblaciones del interior, abordaron el transporte que habría de reunirlos por verdadera casualidad a un mismo sitio, en el que disfrutarían de una animado dia de campo,para lo cual habían llevado consigo su instrumento musical preferido, Aunque nunca antes se habían visto, poco a poco se fueron reuniendo para formar un conjunto y amenizar asi el picnic, que a la postre resultó uno de los más animados que ahí se recuerdan, pues el entusiasmo, maestria y talento que cada uno de los miembros del grupo ponía en las improvizaciones que iniciaba alguno de ellos, rivalizaban o mejor dicho superaban a las que el público juvenil solía escuchar a través del radio en versiones de grupos similares y consagrados. Este fué el primer éxito de los Johnny Jets conjunto integrado por : Mauro Monrreal, director, Oscar Alvarez "el duende" vocalista, Pablo Reyna, guitarra, Raul Galván : batería , Efrén Olvera ; requinto e Isaias Landeros; saxofón. Este grupo se inició aproximadamente en 1961 y fué fundado por Isaias Landeros (saxofonista del grupo) además de Pablo Reyna (armonía), Mauro Monrreal (bajo) ,Oscar Alvarez (vocalista) Efrén Olvera "el oso"(guitarrista) y Raul Galván (baterista). Oscar había pertenecido a otra agrupación en donde tambien figuraba Miguel Ibarra quien posteriormente se convirtió en baterista de los Yaki llamado Los Golden Star.

Los Johnny Jets como todos los demás grupos de la frontera norte emigraron a la Cd de México donde firmaron con el sello CBS grabando su primer LP bajo la dirección musical de Armando Manzanero . Los números Tiburón a la vista y Cosecha de mujeres (un arreglo moderno a dos canciones tropicalonas exitos de Mike Laure) tuvieron un relativo éxito siendo un número festivo llamado El Sapito el que mejor les funcionó.
Para su segundo sencillo el locutor Jaime Ortiz Pino estuvo a cargo de la dirección musical llevando al acetato un hit del grupo Mc Coys cuya letra al español hablaba de una chica que bailaba muy bien los ritmos de moda, el titulo de la canción fué "Es Lupe", para el lado B del disco y a insistencia del grupo grabaron una canción que había sido un éxito de un trio llamado Los Dandys el titulo era "Por Fin" el cual fué como una premonición para el grupo pues a partir de éste sencillo los lanzó a la fama en todo el pais y aun en centro y sudamerica.
A partir de ese momento ligaron una cadena de éxitos destacando entre otros:Bule Bu, Todos queremos a Lupe, Bajate de mi nube, Susy Q, Fiebre, Mi Gran Amor Serás,Bailala María,Vuela Paloma,Suspenso Infernal,Mary Mary,Enamorada de un amigo mio,La carta,La minifalda de Reynalda, Lady madonna,Sin ti, Tres regalos, etc.

Los Johnny Jets se caracterizaron como otros grupos de la frontera norte por el uso del Sax, además introdujeron en al ambiente musical la llamada "Redoba Psicodelica" (la Minifalda de Reynalda" , "Felipe el Jipi" y "Las pestañas de Cirila" son tres números representativos de éste género ), también por el tratamiento modernista que le dieron a los boleros fueron llamados "Los hijos de los Dandys", grabando numeros musicales en éste género como Por fin, Suspenso Infernal, Gema, Eternamente, Tres regalos, etc.

Los Johnny Jets grabaron 8 Lps en su carrera musical.

Sandy Nelson - The Rebirth Of The Beat [1969]

His first recording, with a band called The Renegades (Richard Podolor, Bruce Johnston and Nick Venet), was "Geronimo", written by Venet, produced by Kim Fowley and released on the Original Sound Records label. Although it flopped on the national charts, it charted in some of the midwest markets. The song, along with "Charge", is part of the soundtrack of 1959 film "Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow" released by American International Pictures.
Nelson attended high school with Jan Berry, Dean Torrence (who became Jan and Dean), and Kim Fowley. After gaining respect as a session drummer, he played on such songs as "To Know Him Is To Love Him" (Phil Spector's Teddy Bears, 1958), "Alley-Oop" (The Hollywood Argyles, 1960), and "A Thousand Stars" (Kathy Young and the Innocents, 1960).
His song "Teen Beat", on Original Sound Records, rose to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. Subsequently he signed with the Imperial record label, and pounded out two more Top 40 hits, "Let There Be Drums", which went to #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Drums Are My Beat". In December 1961, the British music magazine, NME, reported that "Let There Be Drums" had gone Top 10 in both the United Kingdom and United States.All three were instrumentals (a feat rarely repeated).Guitar playing on these hits was by co-writer, Richie Podolor (aka Richie Allen), later a songwriter and record producer.
Near the end of 1963, Nelson was in a motorcycle accident. The injuries necessitated amputation of his right foot and part of that leg. Nonetheless, Nelson continued to record into the early 1970s, releasing two or three albums a year, consisting of cover versions of popular hits plus a few original compositions.
Nelson lives now in Boulder City, Nevada and continues to experiment with music on keyboards and piano.
In September, 2008, Nelson and a few friends, recording as Sandy Nelson and the Sin City Termites, released a new record of original compositions, Nelsonized, on the independent Spinout label. Other band members included Eddie Angel (guitarist for Los Straitjackets), Remi Gits, and Billy Favata of Torturing Elvis

Water Skiing (1965) is a full-throttle surf-rock record, and it only makes sense that Eddy tackles that style, since his endless echo was a catalyst for surf-rockers. Almost all of the songs on the album are originals, including the ingenious ripoff "Whip Off." There's nothing really memorable on the album, but all of the songs are opportunities for Eddy to simply play, and he plays very, very well -- enough to make the album worthwhile for most serious Eddy fans. Telstar (II)

The French composer, Jean Ledrut, accused Joe Meek of plagiarism, claiming that the tune of "Telstar" had been copied from "La Marche d'Austerlitz", a piece from a score that Ledrut had written for the 1960 film Austerlitz. This led to a lawsuit that prevented Meek from receiving royalties from the record during his lifetime, and the issue was not resolved in Meek's favour until just three weeks after his death in 1967. Austerlitz was not released in the UK until 1965, and Meek was unaware of the film when the lawsuit was filed in March 1963.

In 1968 the court awarded 8,500 pounds (today about 250,000 euros) to the French composer Jean Ledrut - and rejected the complaint: Four identically bars are not enough, it's also important to view the whole production of the song Telstar as innovative work and complete new interpretation … to late for Joe Meek. The Tornadoes [Redlands, California] - Bustin Surfboards [1963]

The Tornadoes were a surf band from Redlands, California, the first to receive national airplay with a surf instrumental. The song was "Bustin' Surfboards", released on Aertaun Records in 1962, and it has since become a classic and mainstay of the surf genre. One of its distinctions, and appeals, was that the song opened with the sound of an ocean swell (that continued throughout the song), thereby creating a sense of being at a beach. The album with the same name was released in 1963. The band, however, did not manage to follow up on their success. Their song "Shootin' Beavers" was banned from airplay because of its suggestive title. The band temporarily changed their names to The Hollywood Tornadoes, because the British band the Tornado(e)s, were charting with the song "Telstar".
"Bustin' Surfboards" was included on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack in 1994, thereby renewing interest in the band. The Tornadoes continued to perform through 2007. Members as of 2007 (including four members of the original band) were brothers Gerald (bass) and Norman "Roly" Sanders (lead guitar), their cousin Jesse Sanders (rhythm guitar), Leonard Delaney (drums) and Joel Willenbring (saxophone).
In 2005, they released a CD called Now and Then on the Crossfire Publications label containing 29 tracks, including live recordings from their performance at the Zappanale concert in Germany in 2003, cuts from a 1998 CD and two new recordings.

According to the band's website as of November 2008, the band has decided to retire and is no longer touring or performing.
